ARLINGTON -- When asked his height and weight, Arlington senior right-hander Alec O'Connor didn't take long to answer.
"Six-foot-three and too sexy," O'Connor said with a smile.
O'Connor had every right to crack jokes, too, after his best high school game. He threw a one-hit masterpiece, leading the Colts to an 8-0 victory over Mansfield Summit in a District 4-5A showdown Friday night at Arlington High School.
Arlington improved to 11-9 on the season and 3-1 in district, while Summit fell to 8-10, 2-1.
From the start, it was clearly O'Connor's night. With a wind that helped fly balls out of the park, O'Connor started the game by getting three consecutive groundouts. Then, after giving up his only hit of the game to Summit's Cody Dickson to lead off the second inning, O'Connor retired the next 18 batters, finishing the game facing only one batter over the minimum.
"My fastball, curveball and changeup were working and that was a pretty good combination," said O'Connor, who needed only 63 pitches over his seven innings, issuing no walks and striking out five.
"This is definitely a big confidence boost for everybody and helps keep us going. But I really owe this one to my team because the offense really came together and I just needed to keep it rolling with the one-hitter."
Indeed, the Colts' offense showed up, as eight of the nine batters registered a hit. And, more impressive, Arlington finished with three home runs, including two from the No. 8 and 9 hitters, junior first baseman Tanner Allgood and junior shortstop Isaac Sharp.
Colts senior center fielder/leadoff hitter Brandon Lewis had the other home run.
The Colts' bats were busy from the start, as Lewis opened the game with a triple. Kyle Shaffer followed with an RBI single and, later in the inning, junior Hayden Crossnoe had a two-run single, as the Colts took an early 3-0 lead.
Arlington's offensive onslaught continued in the second, as Allgood blasted a two-run shot over the leftfield fence to put Arlington up 5-0.
